Many carvers find sharpening to be more difficult to master than carving itself. This listing is for one set of FOUR sharpening sticks in the following grits: 600 (or 800, whichever is available), 1000, 1500, and 2000. The kits are designed to be used on the inside radius of hook knives. How do you use them? It’s quite simple. Determine what grit you need to start with based on how bad of shape your cutting edge is in. I like to put my hook knife in a vise but you can hold it in your support hand and allow the outside radius to sit on a flat surface instead if you wish. Place the desired sharpening stick flat on the inside of the hook. While rotating the stick slightly, move from the handle end of your hook knife to the tip while gradually pushing from the spine toward the cutting edge. Keep the sharpening stick flat on the inside radius the whole time. Work your way to the highest grit (with a well maintained blade this may be the stick you use the most) and when finished you can opt to use a dowel strop for best results. Once the abrasive starts to become worn simply remove the retention rings keeping it in place, trim off the used portion with scissors, rewrap the abrasive tightly around the dowel, and replace the retention rings. Once you’ve done this, you’ll effectively have a brand new sharpening stick.
