Melissa’s now offers the ORIGINAL Washington navel, grown the old-fashioned way, after being grafted from the last two existing trees of Brazilian root stock. This low acidity, thin skinned and extremely juicy fruit tastes like the navel grandma used to eat! 

The first navel orange variety to arrive in this country was the “Washington” in 1870, which came from Brazil. Since then navel orange hybrids have been developed to withstand the commercial distribution system.

While these hybrids are brighter in color with increased per tree production number, they also contain less sugar in order to extend shelf-life at retail level. While improved farming practices have expanded both volume and availability, the trade-off for this success has also degraded the original flavor characteristics of this icon citrus fruit. 

The following prohibit the shipment of any citrus into their state: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, and Hawaii.
