Old Flatiron "pancake" instruments like this one are highly sought after for their durability, playability, surprising volume, and pleasing tone. This particular example was built in Bozeman, Montana, after Gibson acquired the Flatiron company but before production moved to Nashville. Secondhand Flatiron mandolins are still around, but in diminishing numbers; the mandolas and bouzoukis are somewhat harder to come by. What makes this one truly rare is the koa back and sides. Koa Flatirons generally sound terrific and this one is no exception, but very few of them were made. This is the only koa Flatiron bouzouki I've come across.<br> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; There is moderate play wear and finish checking, certainly nothing out of the ordinary for a 31-year-old instrument. It has a teardrop body shape with flat top and back, solid spruce top, highly figured koa back and rims, and 24-fret ebony fretboard with pearl dot inlays. The ebony nut is 1-7/16" wide, and the scale length is 23-5/8". Mahogany neck with center strip, ebony bridge, half herringbone top trim and herringbone soundhole rosette. Light tan finish, somewhat darker than the typical natural Flatiron top. Nickel Grover tuners and clamshell tailpiece. Strap button added at the heel. Neck is straight, action is low and comfortable. Serial number 9205565. Blue Heron padded gig bag. </p>
